Potassium Cyanide is a white unshaped crystalline mass with a little odor of pungent almonds. It is very toxic inorganic cyanide salt, which is mostly used in place of sodium cyanide. The chemical formula of Potassium Cyanide is KCN with a molecular mass of 65.12g/mol. It is strong poison , if swallowed , it works fastly even if consume in small amount. Usually cyanide are poisonous because it prevents cells from using oxygen to create energy molecules.
Physical properties of potassium cyanide also involves that it is water soluble and succulent solid. And if go through its chemical properties then we come to know that it decompose slowly in air and quickly on heating to release toxic gas known as Hydrogen cyanide gas. Potassium cyanide crystals should store in dry and acid free conditions. Exposure of its solid form will evolve toxic HCN gas which will ultimately toxic by inhalation.
Uses of Potassium Cyanide -
--> Used in mining industry for gold and silver extractions.
--> Helpful in preparation of plastics and pharmaceuticals.
--> Used in electroplating ,developing photographs , insecticides and fumigation.
--> Initially it was used in fishing to kill fishes and take them out of water but later on this method is forbidden.
--> Mostly used in organic synthesis for production of nitriles and carboxylic acids
It usually affects the whole body but mainly to that organs which are sensitive to low oxygen levels. Potassium cyanide is non-combustible in nature.
