Toor dal is also known as arhar dal. Skinned and split toor dal is widely used form of lentil.  In vegetarian foods, toor dal gives requisite proteins for balanced diet. The toor dal is little sweet in taste , having nutty savour , can be digested easily and retain the flavor of spices  quickly. As compared to moong dal, toor dal takes a little longer time to cook. When toor dal mixed with rice, a high protein is obtained.

How to use Toor Dal?


  • Soak toor dal  in water for 1-2 hrs or you can also cooked in pressure cooker for 10 mins.

  • Cooked toor dal can be combined with Indian spices served with rice and chappati.

  • Toor dal cooked with rice , famous as Turichi Khichdi in Maharashtra rich in protein diet.

  • Sambhar is prepared from toor dal and can be served with Idli and dosa.

  • Dal bati is a famous and traditional food in Rajasthan. The dal used in this dish is toor dal and sometimes it is mixed with other dal as well.


How to Store Toor Dal?

People can store toor dal for a year in covered bin or an airtight container in a cool dry place. They can add few bay leaves or red chilies in dal in order to keep away insects which may affect the dal.
